Todd Cordell: Devils Q&A: On Jagr, Gelinas, Coaching Candidates, The Draft & More

Todd, Devils look to me the way the Flames did about 3 years ago. Some well established vets & older core pieces but no where near capable of a long playoff run. Not enough in the cupboards, probably because they lost Kovalchuk & Parise & with not even futures coming back. Devils have a great young goalie & surplus of good young Dmen. Sounds like Lou should be changing the guard & try to accelerate a rebuild. Flames have some real good young forward pieces banging the door to get minutes with the big team. We have rolled in good young forwards into our lineup in Gaudreau, Joorish & Granlund & add Monahan who is only 20 years old & Colborne thats 5 forward positions youth has taken positions on the big team. We have 4 more that consensus says absolutely need big team minutes and must get the chance no later than next Fall in Bennett, Porrier Shore & Sven. There are still several very very good forward prospects coming in the B+ variety + Klimchuk. The only decent D prospect we have is Wotherspoon. That's basically it. A few other young D are probably at least 3 years from even getting a whiff. Our fan base are pretty married to a lot of our forward prospects developing really nicely. Problem is how many new forwards can you give a chance to in a small 2-3 year window. I wouldn't give up our 1st round pick as we are probably unlikely making the playoffs, we hope they do but most of us are pretty realistic. We need a 22-23 bluechip dman ready to carve their way into a 4-5-6 position on the team. Do you see a fit here, not a TDL selling or buying scenario, but a long term future type trade of young potential. I'm assuming Larsson has played his way out of the dog house & Merrill seems to be residing there lately. Would a Sven or Klimchuk & a Agostino or Reinhart be enough to acquire one of your young D with NHL games under their belt? No luggage dumping, just a straight youth for youth to help each team accelerate shoring up some organizational deficiencies. Does that make sense or Jersey really doesn't have rebuild on the radar.

Todd you forgot the most important question? Will lou lamerillio still be GM when this horrible season comes to an end?

biggest problem was expecting clowe, havlat and ryder to play top six minutes and produce. Losing Kovalchuk really badly hurt the offense, losing Parise didn't help either. I like some of your younger players and you've got solid goaltending and a number of good pieces on defense. The biggest need is clearly up front and I don't know how you fix that short term.

I wasn't thinking stepping down, i was thinking more on the lines of ownership firing him or giving him some meaningless title with no authority. Really don't want him handling another draft or free agency year.

I guess that depends on what short term is ? Next year ? If so maybe our top five forward pick makes the team I mean it shouldn't be hard for him to walk in and be the most offensively gifted player in the organization . But can we expect anyone to come in from the draft and put up 60 points in their first season ? That's doubtful. If you mean 2-3 years down the road then I fully expect boucher to be here and Matteau then who knows how far along our pick this year will be. Obviously the best option we have is to try and add a potential 50-70 pt player for one of our young guys. Other then that we aren't landing a player like that and free agency and I don't think there is a player available worth moving a package that include our first this year. Cannot risk missing on a franchise piece!

Also a mid-round pick for Ryder is bananas. He's bad and has a $3.5 mil cap hit. No one's taking on that crap.

I dont know much about the nba but looking at the 76ers record the past couple of years and management changes I don't think the owners are too worried about that kind of change

But all lou has to do to get in your good books is to trade larsson for a 6th round pick

My question is what exactly has lou done in the last decade to warrant him keeping his job? His drafts have been horrible, his best talent walked out the door without so much as a draft pick coming back, his free agent signing are nothing short of a bad joke, he has hired and fired how many coaches while still keeping his job, when exactly does his credit for championships won close to 20 years ago run out?

So trade Parise and don't make finals in 2012, can't blame lou for Kovy leaving and players of their caliber don't climb on trees or are drafted very high unless you are lucky

David Conte is the one who takes care of drafting

Sure FA hasn't been the best but how many top guys are going to come to nj

Agree that Conte is one the needs to go. Devils drafting has been horrible for many years. And enough w blaming it on devils deep playoff runs and subsequent late td picks. Det has done the same yet have been able to draft very well. Conte and his team have to go.
